Adab and Sunnah After the Rain Stops in Islam

Rain is one of God’s graces that brings blessings to all creatures on earth. In Islam, there are adab and sunnah that are recommended after the rain stops as a form of gratitude to Allah. Here are some adab and sunnah that can be practiced:

1. Say Hamdalah

After the rain falls, it is recommended to say Alhamdulillah as a form of gratitude to Allah for the blessings given. This is as Allah says in Surah Ibrahim verse 7:

“If you are grateful, We will surely increase (favors) to you…” (QS. Ibrahim: 7)

2. Pray that the rain will bring benefits

Rasulullah ﷺ taught us a prayer that can be recited after it rains:

“Muthirna bi fadhlillahi wa rahmatih.” (Meaning: We were given rain because of Allah’s grace and mercy.) (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

This prayer is a form of belief that everything happens because of God’s will.

3. Utilizing Rainwater

In a hadith narrated by Imam Muslim, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once took off his clothes to get wet from the rain and said:

“Because it (rain) has just been created by Allah.” (HR. Muslim)

Therefore, if possible, we can take rainwater to perform ablution or simply wash our bodies as a form of blessing.

4. Avoiding Puddles and Slippery Roads

After rain, there are usually puddles of water that can be a source of disease or cause accidents. As a form of caution, it is advisable to be careful when walking and avoid dangerous places.

5. Spreading Kindness and Giving Alms

One way to be grateful for the rain is to share with others, such as helping those who are having difficulties due to heavy rain or giving food to those in need.

6. Seeing the Rainbow with a Sense of Amazement at Allah’s Creation

If a rainbow appears after rain, then we are advised to admire Allah’s creation and remember His greatness. As His word:

“And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the differences in your languages and colors…” (QS. Ar-Rum: 22)

7. Asking for Protection from Excessive Rain

Although rain is a blessing, rain that is too heavy can bring disaster. Therefore, after the rain stops, we can pray that the rain that falls will always bring benefits and not bring disaster.

Conclusion

The manners and sunnah after the rain stops are a form of gratitude to Allah for His blessings. By practicing this sunnah, we can get blessings and maintain the safety of ourselves and the environment. May we always receive mercy and protection from Allah in every situation.

Exemplary Story: Rain as a Blessing in the Time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

During the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, rain was considered a blessing from Allah that brought blessings to humans and nature. There are many stories from the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions that show how they responded to rain with full faith and exemplary behavior. One of the famous stories is the incident of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s prayer during a drought.

The Prophet’s Prayer for Rain

One day, in the city of Medina there was a very long dry season. The sun was shining hot, the land became dry, the wells began to run out of water, and the plants withered. The Muslims began to have difficulty getting water for their daily needs.

In this condition, a companion came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while he was giving a sermon at the Prophet’s Mosque. The friend said, “O Messenger of Allah, our livestock are dying of thirst, our fields are dry, and we are in great difficulty because there is no rain. Pray to Allah that He will send us rain.”

Hearing this request, Rasulullah ﷺ raised his hands to the sky and prayed:

“Allahumma aghitsna, Allahumma aghitsna, Allahumma aghitsna.”
(Meaning: O Allah, send rain on us, O Allah, send rain on us, O Allah, send rain on us.)

Not long after Rasulullah ﷺ prayed, clouds began to gather in the sky, the wind blew cool, and the rain fell heavily. The friends were grateful and happy because Allah answered the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ.

The rain continued to fall for several days until water began to flood the streets of Medina. Then, on the following Friday, a companion came back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, it has been raining continuously until we are flooded. Pray to Allah that the rain will stop.”

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed again:

“Allahumma hawalayna wa la ‘alayna.”

(Meaning: O Allah, send down rain around us, not to harm us.)

Immediately, the sky began to clear and the rain stopped in Medina, but it continued to fall in the surrounding areas that needed water.
