Adab and Sunnah of the Prophet in Attending the Study of the Taklim Council
Attending studies or taklim assemblies is a form of seeking knowledge that is highly recommended in Islam. Rasulullah ﷺ provided many guidelines about adab and sunnah that must be considered when attending the science assembly in order to get maximum blessings and benefits. Here are some adab and sunnah that you need to pay attention to:
1. Straighten your intentions because of Allah
Before attending a study, a Muslim must correct his intentions. Attendance at science councils should be solely to seek Allah’s approval and increase understanding of religion, not to show off or simply follow trends.
Rasulullah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, deeds depend on the intention, and everyone will get according to what he intended.” (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)
2. Pray before going to the Science Assembly
One of the sunnahs before attending a study is to pray to be given useful knowledge. Rasulullah ﷺ taught prayer:
“Allahumma inni as’aluka ilman nafi’an wa rizqan thayyiban wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan.” (Meaning: O Allah, I ask You for useful knowledge, good fortune, and accepted deeds.)
3. Dress modestly and cover your private parts
When attending a science assembly, you should dress neatly, cleanly and in accordance with Islamic law. Islam teaches its followers to appear polite and maintain manners in all circumstances.
4. Arrive Early and Sit in the Front Row
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged his people to immediately seek knowledge. Arriving early to study shows your sincerity and desire to study. Apart from that, sitting in the front row also has its own advantages.
Rasulullah ﷺ said:
“Whoever takes the path to seek knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to heaven.” (HR. Muslim)
5. Listen intently and do not speak during the study
Respect for teachers and focus on listening to knowledge is a very important part of etiquette. Rasulullah ﷺ said:
“If you say to your friend ‘shut up’ while the preacher is giving a sermon, then you have done something in vain.” (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

6. Record the knowledge gained
Writing important points from studies is one way to remember and apply the knowledge gained. The Prophet’s companions also often recorded their knowledge so that they would not easily forget.
7. Ask with good etiquette
If there is something you don’t understand, ask politely and respect the presenter. Islam teaches the importance of asking questions so that knowledge becomes wider, but with good manners.
8. Do not disturb other participants
When attending a study, avoid talking to yourself, playing on your cell phone, or doing anything that could disturb other people’s concentration. The science assembly is a place where peace must be maintained.
9. Practice and Spread Knowledge
One form of the blessing of knowledge is to practice it in everyday life and pass it on to others. Rasulullah ﷺ said:
“Convey from me even just one verse.” (HR. Bukhari)
10. Pray after study
After attending the science assembly, it is sunnah to pray so that the knowledge gained will be a blessing and be useful. Rasulullah ﷺ taught prayer:
“Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, asyhadu an laa ilaaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atuubu ilaik.” (Meaning: Glory be to You, O Allah, and by praising You I testify that there is no god but You. I ask forgiveness and repent to You.)
Conclusion
Attending a taklim assembly is a practice that is highly recommended in Islam. By maintaining manners and following the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, the knowledge gained will be more useful and bring blessings. May we always be given ease in seeking knowledge and putting it into practice in everyday life. Amen.
