Adab and Sunnah in Asking for Pious and Pious Descendants

Having pious and pious offspring is every parent’s dream. In Islam, there are adab and sunnah taught by the Prophet ﷺ in asking Allah to be blessed with children who are good and have noble character. Here are some adab and sunnah that can be practiced:

1. Pray with full confidence and sincerity

Allah commands His servants to always pray with full confidence. In the Qur’an, Allah relates the prayer of the Prophet Zakaria asking for descendants:

“O my Lord, grant me a child who is among the pious people.” (QS. Ash-Shaffat: 100)

Praying with confidence and sincerity is the main key in asking for pious and pious offspring.

2. Pray at necessary times

Some recommended times to pray include:

The last third of the night during the tahajjud prayer

After the fardhu prayer

When the rain falls because rain is a blessing

Between the call to prayer and iqamah

3. Using prayers taught in the Koran and Hadith

One prayer that can be practiced is:

“Rabbana hablana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a’yun waj’alna lil-muttaqina imama.” (Meaning: O our Lord, grant us our spouses and our descendants as the comfort of our hearts, and make us leaders of the pious.) (QS. Al-Furqan: 74)

4. Trust in Allah

After trying and praying, a Muslim must put his trust in Allah. Allah knows what is best for His servants, including when is the right time to be given offspring.

5. Maintaining the Quality of Husband and Wife Relationships

The Prophet ﷺ taught etiquette before having sex by reciting a prayer:

“Bismillah, Allahumma jannibna ash-syaithan wa jannib ash-syaithana ma razaqtana.” (Meaning: In the name of Allah, O Allah, keep us away from Satan and keep Satan away from the sustenance that You have bestowed upon us.) (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

6. Increasing Almsgiving

Almsgiving can be one of the reasons for prayers being answered. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Treat the sick among you with alms.” (Narrated by Thabrani and Baihaqi)

Therefore, increasing almsgiving can also be an effort so that Allah will provide pious offspring.

7. Maintaining a Good Lifestyle

Maintaining a halal and good diet and avoiding haram foods greatly affects the offspring that will be born. The Prophet ﷺ taught the importance of consuming halal food so that prayers are more easily answered.

8. Be patient and remain positive towards Allah

Not all couples are immediately blessed with offspring. Therefore, it is important to remain patient and always think positively towards Allah. As His word says:

“And indeed, We created man from the essence of clay.” (QS. Al-Mu’minun: 12)

Allah has the best plan for each of His servants, so keep praying and trying.

Conclusion

Asking for pious and pious offspring must be done with good manners, prayers that are in accordance with the sunnah, and maximum effort. With faith in Allah and following the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, God willing, our prayers will be answered in the best way. May Allah grant children who are the pride of the world and the hereafter. Aamiin.
