Message of the Prophet Muhammad

It is obligatory for every Muslim to bathe at least once every seven days, at which time he washes his entire body.
(HR. Bukhari & Muslim)

Al-Qadhi Abu Syuja’ Rahimahullah in Matan Taqrib said,

Shaykh Ibrahim Al-Bajuri (may Allah’s blessings be upon him) gave important rules to differentiate between bathing which is considered obligatory and sunnah:

“All baths that have a reason come first, then the law of bathing is obligatory. Every time you bathe for a reason, then the law of bathing is sunnah. However, it is also possible that bathing is a sunnah because it comes first, namely: (1) bathing because of washing a corpse, (2) bathing because a non-believer has converted to Islam,
(3) bathing because he is conscious of going crazy and fainting.” (Hasyiyah Al-Bajuri ‘ala Syarh Al-‘Allamah Ibn Qasim Al-Ghazzi ‘ala Matn Abi Syuja’, 1:351)
